Conductor and cellist David Lockington has been on both sides of the audition curtain! Mr. Lockington is proud to have hired key principals and section players for more than 10 professional orchestras. His has been the deciding vote.

Mr. Lockington will guide the preparation for your auditions. He can pinpoint what needs improvement and help you get there- both musically and psychologically. His goal is to create the conditions for you to succeed. His keen ear and knowledge of the orchestral repertoire combined with an intimate understanding of what audition committees are listening for is invaluable to any instrumentalist hoping to win an audition.

In addition to winning orchestral auditions, Mr. Lockington has performed as a cello soloist.  Married to world renowned violinist Dylana Jenson, together they have performed the Brahms Double concerto all over the United States.

David Lockington

Over the past thirty-five years, David Lockington has developed an impressive conducting career in the United States. A native of Great Britain, he served as the Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony from January 1999 to May 2015, and was named the orchestra’s Conductor Laureate. He is Music Director of the Pasadena and Modesto Symphonies. Mr. Lockington was the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias in Spain. He is currently Principal Artistic Partner with the Northwest Sinfonietta in Washington state.
Previous posts have included Assistant Conductor of the Denver Symphony Orchestra and Opera Colorado, Associate Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, New Mexico Symphony and the Long Island Philharmonic.
Mr. Lockington's guest conducting engagements include appearances with the Saint Louis, Houston, Detroit, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, Oregon, Nashville and Phoenix symphonies; the Rochester and Louisiana Philharmonics; and the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, New Jersey, Indianapolis, Utah, Pacific, Colorado, San Diego, Ann Arbor, Stamford, Wichita and Kansas City symphonies, the Florida and Louisville Orchestras, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and the Buffalo, Calgary and Oklahoma Philharmonics. Mr. Lockington's summer festival activities include appearances at the Grand Teton, Colorado Music, Interlochen, Chautauqua and Eastern Music festivals. Internationally, he has conducted the Northern Sinfonia in Great Britain, Sinfonica Nacional de Costa Rica, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra in Beijing and Taiwan, and led the English Chamber Orchestra on tour in Asia. Mr Lockington has recorded with Dylana Jenson and the London Symphony Orchestra and Anne Akiko Meyers with the English Chamber Orchestra.

David Lockington began his career as a cellist and was the Principal with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.  After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Cambridge where he was a choral scholar, Mr. Lockington came to the United States on a scholarship to Yale University where he received his Master's Degree in cello performance with Aldo Parisot and studied conducting with Otto Werner Mueller.  He was a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and was assistant principal cellist with the Denver Symphony.



In your 65 minute session, Mr. Lockington will give you the opportunity to play your excerpts as if performing an audition and then give specific notes on rhythm, intonation, tone, musicality and context. He will also make suggestions on how to practice. PDF's of the excerpts need to be emailed beforehand.
